Hail Damage Insurance Estimate: Complete Example & Breakdown

Hail damage claims cover more than the roof. Here's what a complete hail damage estimate looks like — and the line items adjusters most commonly miss.

Overview

A complete hail damage claim accounts for damage to every exterior component of the property — not just the roof. Siding, gutters, windows, screens, A/C condensers, fencing, and outbuildings are all covered under most hail damage policies. Insurance adjusters routinely scope only the roof, leaving substantial legitimate damage items un-estimated.

What a complete hail damage estimate includes

Roof replacement (full scope)
See roof replacement estimate example for full breakdown.
Gutters and downspouts
Hail dents aluminum gutters and downspouts. Full replacement is typically warranted when dent count exceeds threshold.
Siding — hail damage
Aluminum and vinyl siding shows hail impact marks (spatter marks on vinyl, dents on aluminum). Requires documentation of impact density per section.
Window screens
Metal window screens are damaged by hail impacts and require replacement. Often overlooked in adjuster estimates.
Window trim and casing
Wood and composite window trim shows hail impacts and may require replacement.
A/C condenser
Fin damage to A/C condenser units is covered under hail damage. Requires HVAC assessment.
Fencing
Wood and composite fencing shows hail damage. Line items for individual sections.
Outbuildings
Garages, sheds, and other structures on the property are covered under the same hail event.
Paint — exterior
In some cases, hail impacts through paint to substrate on painted surfaces, requiring refinishing.

Common items insurance companies leave out

Scoping only the roof and missing all secondary structures
Not documenting A/C condenser fin damage
Missing window screens entirely
Not counting outbuildings (detached garages, sheds)
Missing gutter guard replacement when gutters are replaced
Not documenting siding on all four elevations
Failing to supplement for matching siding when damaged sections can't be matched

How to compare your estimate to the insurance company's scope

1Request the adjuster's sketch and compare square footage for each elevation
2Count gutters and downspout linear footage from photos and compare to estimate
3Verify all secondary structures appear on the estimate
4Confirm A/C condenser is included if unit was exposed to hail
5Check window screen count against your photo documentation
6Look for matching provisions on siding if only partial damage is scoped
